Special Guest Artist Bios:
The legendary Italian-American comic-book artist John Romita, Sr. is best known for his work on Marvel Comics’ The Amazing Spider-Man. As art director for Marvel Comics, Romita played a major role in defining the look of new characters including Wolverine which he created with artist Herb Trimpe in November 1974. A member of the Comic Book Hall of Fame (2002), Romita began his comic book art career as an uncredited ghost artist in 1949. Romita’s first known credited comic-book art is as penciler and inker on the six-page story “The Bradshaw Boys” in Western Outlaws #1 (Feb 1954) for Marvel’s 1950s predecessor, Atlas Comics. Romita spent much of his career at Marvel working on The Amazing Spider-Man, but also drew Daredevil, Fantastic Four, and Captain America among others. Although retired from day-to-day comics work, Romita continues to contribute work to Marvel Comics on a regular basis.
Herbert “Herb” Trimpe is an American comic-book artist and occasional writer, best known for his work on Marvel Comics’ The Incredible Hulk and as the first artist to draw for publication the character Wolverine, who later became a breakout star of The X-Men. Trimpe joined Marvel’s production staff in 1967 and remained associated with the company as a contract artist through 1996. He made his professional penciling debut with two Kid Colt Western stories, in Kid Colt, Outlaw #134-135 (May & July 1967). In the 1960s, during the period known as the Silver Age of Comics, Trimpe was assigned to pencil what became his signature character, the Hulk. From 1968 through 1975, he drew the character for a virtually unbroken run. In the issue, The Incredible Hulk #181 (November 1974), he drew the character Wolverine which has become one of the top comic-books of all-time. As a Marvel mainstay, Trimpe would draw nearly every Marvel character including Captain America, Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Nick Fury, Thor among others. Trimpe still continues to contribute to Marvel Comics and other publishers on a regular basis.
John Romita, Jr. is an American comic-book artist best known for his extensive work for Marvel Comics from the 1970s to the 2000s. Romita began his career at Marvel UK, doing sketches for covers of reprints. His American debut was with the six page story entitled “Chaos at the Coffee Bean!” in Amazing Spider-Man Annual # 11 (1977). Romita’s early popularity began with his run on Iron Man which began in 1978. In the early 1980s, he had his first regular run on the Amazing Spider-Man series. Working with writer Roger Stern on Amazing Spider-Man, he co-created the character Hobgoblin and from 1983 to 1986 and again in 1993 he had a run on the popular Uncanny X-Men series.
Romita’s later work included an extended run on Daredevil, and additional Marvel titles including The Punisher War Zone, The Hulk, The Mighty Thor among others. He drew Marvel’s Wolverine with author Mark Millar as part of the character’s thirtieth-anniversary celebration. In 2008, Romita again returned to Amazing Spider-Man and is currently collaborating with Mark Millar for a creator-owned series, Kick-Ass, published by Marvel’s Icon imprint. He is currently wrapping filming on the movie version of the comic-book due in theaters in late 2009.
Josef “Joe” Rubinstein is a German born comic-book artist and inker, most associated with inking Marvel Comics’ The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe. Rubinstein has worked for every major comics company including Dark Horse Comics (Archenemies) and DC Comics’ Ion mini-series and Green Arrow/Black Canary. Rubinstein has worked on numerous Marvel series including Amazing Spider-Man, Captain America, and New Mutants among others. His work on the Wolverine character include issues #1-4 (September 1982) and Uncanny X-Men.
